PENOMBRA
A bottle that does not exist, built to find out what it really takes for glass to look like glass.
Low-key photography is the hardest place to put glass. There is almost no light, so there is almost nothing to reflect, and glass has no appearance of its own. What you see when you look at a bottle is not the bottle: it is the room around it, folded and compressed by the curve.
PENOMBRA started as a question rather than a brief. If the set is dark, where does the shape come from? The answer, in a real studio, is not more light. It is fewer, larger sources, placed where their reflection lands on the edge you want to see.
The object is fictional. It was designed to be difficult: a shoulder that changes direction twice, a metal cap that has to read as metal and not as plastic, and a paper label that must look applied rather than printed on.
