QUIETE

Electronics are judged on two millimetres: the edge of the metal, and the light that says it is on.

QUIETE, three-quarter view: an anodised aluminium speaker with a fabric top and a lit status ring

Anodised aluminium is a trap. It is not chrome and it is not paint. It is a satin surface that stretches a highlight along the body, and when that stretch is missing the whole object collapses into grey plastic.

The status ring is the second trap. It is the only emissive thing on the product, it is one and a half millimetres thick, and it has to read as lit without going white. A ring at full white is not a bright ring: it is a ring with no shape.

The fabric top is what keeps it from looking like a tin. Matte against satin, absorbing where everything else reflects. It gives the eye the one soft thing in the frame.

Styleframes

Macro of the metal lid
The fabric top, close. The only matte surface on the object.
The shoulder of the jar where the profile turns
The shoulder where satin metal turns: the highlight has to run, not break.
Macro of the printed band and its edge
The ring: lit, and still holding its shape.
Backlit: the ceramic edge catches the light
Backlight. Satin metal gives back an edge, not a mirror.
Camera at floor level
Camera on the desk. A small object, made architectural.
Plan view on a black disc
Plan view. The grille is the product.
Symmetric front view, band readable
Symmetric, ring readable, nothing clever.
Three variants of the same jar
Three variants, one build.
