QUIETE
Electronics are judged on two millimetres: the edge of the metal, and the light that says it is on.
Anodised aluminium is a trap. It is not chrome and it is not paint. It is a satin surface that stretches a highlight along the body, and when that stretch is missing the whole object collapses into grey plastic.
The status ring is the second trap. It is the only emissive thing on the product, it is one and a half millimetres thick, and it has to read as lit without going white. A ring at full white is not a bright ring: it is a ring with no shape.
The fabric top is what keeps it from looking like a tin. Matte against satin, absorbing where everything else reflects. It gives the eye the one soft thing in the frame.
