BRACE

Metal does one thing neither glass nor ceramic can: it stretches a highlight in a single direction. Get that wrong and it reads as grey plastic in half a second.

BRACE, three-quarter view: a metal balm tin with a rolled edge and a printed band, on a dark reflective surface
One turn, fixed lights. The highlight is the only thing that moves, and on metal it has to run along the rolled edge, not sit on it.

A balm tin is almost nothing: a shallow cylinder, a rolled edge, a lid. There is no transparency to play with and no matte surface to hide behind. The entire object is a mirror bent into a curve, and every panel in the room lands on it.

Which makes the rolled edge the whole job. It is the only curve on the piece, it is two millimetres deep, and it is where the highlight either turns cleanly or breaks into steps. Everything else in the frame is there to give that edge something to reflect.

The printed band is the counterweight: paper against metal, matte against specular. Without it the tin has no scale and no brand. With it, the eye has somewhere to land before it starts looking at the light.

Styleframes

Macro of the metal lid
The lid, close. On metal there is nowhere for a soft edge to hide.
The shoulder of the jar where the profile turns
The rolled edge: two millimetres that decide whether it reads as metal.
Macro of the printed band and its edge
Paper against metal, the only matte thing in the frame.
Backlit: the ceramic edge catches the light
Backlight. Metal does not glow either: it takes a line and gives back the room.
Camera at floor level
Camera on the floor. A tin, made large.
Plan view on a black disc
Plan view. The lid is the product.
Symmetric front view, band readable
Symmetric, band readable, nothing clever.
Three variants of the same jar
Three variants, one build.

Scale

61profile points, generated from a curve
9frames, one object, one lighting setup
0.18 mmprinted band, modelled not painted
3variants from the same build

Every scene is generated from code. A variant is a line, not another job.
